This modern remake stars Jack Huston as Judah Ben-Hur, a nobleman betrayed by his adoptive brother and forced into slavery by the Romans. It’s a tale of vengeance, forgiveness, and spiritual redemption. Morgan Freeman adds gravitas as Ilderim, a sheik who trains Ben-Hur in chariot racing. While not a straight-from-the-Bible story, it’s set firmly in the time of Christ and weaves in religious themes throughout, including a few haunting scenes with Jesus himself.

Vikings

Created by Michael Hirst (The Tudors), Vikings follows the legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, as he rises from farmer to king. It’s steeped in mythology, yes, but also grounded in history, much like David’s own journey from shepherd to sovereign. Expect fierce battles, brotherhoods shattered by betrayal, and the constant clash between personal ambition and destiny. It’s a mature, intense ride, but incredibly rewarding.

This short-lived series is a modern reimagining of the biblical tale of King Saul and David, set in a contemporary kingdom that blends biblical themes with political thriller vibes. Ian McShane stars as the powerful and tormented King Silas (a Saul-like figure), while Christopher Egan plays David Shepherd, a young soldier who becomes a national hero and, eventually, a threat to the king. The show blends modern politics, prophecy, and divine destiny in a bold, creative way. It didn’t get the attention it deserved during its original run, but it’s absolutely worth a watch for any fan of The House of David.
