What’s the Story?
The show centers around Rumi Hussein, a teenager living in suburban New Jersey with his big, loud, and traditional Egyptian-American family. There’s his strict, penny-pinching dad, caring mom, rebellious sister, TV-obsessed grandma, and old-school grandpa. Their life is full of everyday chaos, awkward moments, and relatable family drama.
It’s September 10, 2001.
Rumi just wants to impress his teacher with a school presentation about Egypt. But by the next morning, everything changes.
Life Before and After 9/11
Before the attacks, the family is focused on their own struggles, money problems, unspoken crushes, family secrets, and dreams of success. But when 9/11 hits, the mood shifts dramatically.
The Hussein family suddenly becomes a target of fear and judgment. Even though they consider themselves fully American, the way others look at them changes overnight.
Rumi’s dad becomes obsessed with appearing “more American” than anyone else. There’s even a big musical number where the family sings they are the “#1 Happy Family USA!”, but the scene quickly turns sour when the FBI arrives.
This isn’t your typical cartoon. #1 Happy Family USA feels like a mix of Family Guy and Ramy, with the fast-paced jokes of South Park, but it also carries a strong emotional message.
It doesn’t shy away from showing how Muslim families were unfairly treated after 9/11. But instead of delivering a serious drama, it uses comedy to make viewers think and laugh at the same time.
One of the funniest characters is Grandma, who treats her TV like it’s her own child. She even buckles it into the van when flying to Cairo! Meanwhile, Rumi’s sister Mona is struggling with her own identity, trying to confess her feelings for her best friend.
